General Conference Objectives:

At the conclusion of this conference, participant will be able to:

1. Identify strategies to improve health equity among Native and Pacific Peoples in practice.
2. List key issues concerning health inequity among Native Hawaiians and Pacific Peoples. Empower community leaders to guide their people towards optimum health.
3. Summarize the therapeutic steps of lifestyle modifications to reduce the prevalence and impact of the metabolic syndrome on CVD and diabetes.

Target Audience: This program should be of interest to physicians, physicians-in-training, social scientists, nurses and health care providers who serve Native and Pacific Peoples.

Continuing Medical Education: The Hawai’i Consortium for Continuing Medical Education is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Hawai’i Consortium for Continuing Medical Education designates this educational activity for a maximum of 12 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in this activity.

Celebrating the Tseng Legacy

Chancellor Tseng’s 12-year tenure at UH Hilo represents the pinnacle of a distinguished career in higher education. The first Asian female to head a four-year university in the U.S., Rose brought a vision to UH Hilo developed by three decades as an educator and administrator in Silicon Valley.

Under her leadership, UH Hilo has experienced a period of unprecedented growth, transforming the campus from a small undergraduate liberal arts college into a comprehensive university with a reach that extends far beyond Hawai`i. The University and Big Island community salute Rose Tseng for her extraordinary legacy.

Tseng Endowment

As she steps down, Rose and her husband Ray are making a generous donation of $100,000 to launch the Rose and Raymond Tseng Distinguished Lecture Series Endowment at UH Hilo. The Tseng Lecture Series will invite prominent international leaders to deliver presentations on topics that perpetuate Rose’s legacy, including international women’s leadership, global technology and entrepreneurship, integration of science and technology, and indigenous language/culture issues.

UH Hilo’s premier public reception space, Ho’oulu Terrace, will be renamed The Rose and Raymond Tseng Terrace to commemorate the Tsengs’ role in UH Hilo’s growth and their many contributions to the greater community.

Introducing the UHH Conference Center:

The College of Pharmacy (CoP) is working in collaboration with the University of Hawaii at Hilo Conference Center. Judith Fox-Goldstein, Director and the Conference Center Staff will coordinate the conference arrangements and travel for those coming from the neighbor islands.

Accommodations:

A block of rooms has been reserved at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Hotel. The CoP will cover one (1) night of your accommodations on February 5th, but you are most welcome to extend your reservations.  The Conference Center has arranged a special discounted rate of $139 ++ (3 days pre & post). Please let us know your travel time preferences. You should plan on arriving at the Kona International Airport no later than 5:00pm to accommodate the conference schedule.  The meeting will conclude by 4:00pm (at the latest) on February 6th. The UHH Conference Center will be booking your reservations and will discuss your individual travel plans with you following your R.S.V.P.

Mahalo for sharing your mana`o during the 2009 “Evaluating the George W. Bush Presidency” conference which took place in Hilo last month from July 29-31, 2009.

Your presentations provided much insight into the different perspectives of academic analysis which collectively, provide a valuable framework for evaluating any political position at any point in time.

As the conference came to a conclusion, the dominant theme, (as it was percieved for us in the audience), was one of academic devotion to the science of politics toward a common goal of protecting the intent of our constitution.

The texture and fresh flavors of the brown rice and crunchy vegetables are heightened by the richness of the fresh pineapple dressing. Don’t be discouraged by the long list of ingredients. It’s a snap to make and leftovers can be stir-fried in a wok for another dinner during the week. Remember: Dress the salad just before serving.

2 cups brown rice, cooked
1 cup carrots, peeled and shredded
¼ cup mango, peeled and cubed
¾ cup scallion, finely diced
½ cup cashews, chopped
½ cup macadamia nuts
2 tablespoons black sesame seeds
½ cup water chestnuts, sliced
1½ cup snow peas

For the dressing:

? cup macadamia oil
3 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
¼ cup pineapple juice or any tropical juice
1 medium garlic clove, minced
Hot chili oil, to taste
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 cup fresh pineapple, cubed
1 tablespoon fresh ginger, peeled
1½ teaspoon salt

Place all the ingredients for the rice salad in a large bowl and toss to combine. Salad can be made 2 days ahead and kept covered in the refrigerator until needed.

Place all the dressing ingredients in a blender and pulse until well combined and smooth. Dressing can be made 3 days ahead. Cover and refrigerate until needed.

To serve: Combine just enough dressing into the rice salad and toss well. Don’t overdress.

Currently, there is no consistently effective drug or vaccine available. Cryptosporidium gp40/15, is a glycoprotein that is proteolytically cleaved to yield the mature glycopeptides gp40 and gp15, both of which are implicated in attachment and invasion to host cells. Previously, we reported that C. parvum expresses a subtilisin-like serine protease activity with furin-type specificity that cleaves recombinant gp40/15 into gp40 and gp15.

Hui Ka Ua – Supporting UHH & HCC

Hui Ka Ua, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization formed two years ago to provide community support for both UHH and HCC, is inviting students to get involved as well.

Hui Ka Ua, which literally means “the organization of the nurturing rain”, is seeking assistance in creating a membership newsletter and a new website. Students interested in helping with these projects can contact Carol VanCamp, President, at 982-9958.

Students memberships in Hui Ka Ua are also available at significantly reduced rates. Some of the organization’s projects to date have included hosting new faculty receptions, providing kukui nut leis to all UHH graduates, providing Vulcan T-shirts and bumper stickers to incoming students, supporting UHH and HCC initiatives for new buildings and programs, and several others.

Scientific Conference

The theme of the conference is Subseafloor Observatories and Exploration of the Deep Biosphere. The conference will comprise a series of keynote speakers covering aspects of CORK subseafloor observatory history and design, technical specifications and options for future modifications, drilling and other operational considerations, monitoring and contamination concerns, key results from earlier subseafloor experiments using observatories, and future directions for subseafloor biosphere science involving observatories (for description of CORKs and details of how they have been used see (Jannasch et al. 2003). In addition to oral presentations, all participants will be asked to present during a series of poster sessions (to be scheduled throughout the day in association with coffee and meal breaks) highlighting work completed or in progress involving subseafloor observatories and/or the deep biosphere, or conceptual proposals describing how to move the science forward through novel application of observatory technology for passive (monitoring) or active experiments. Our intent is to mix lecture and poster/discussion formats so as to encourage engagement and development of collaborative opportunities between individuals and groups that have not previously worked together or have had difficulty understanding each other’s science.

Educational Workshop

The training workshop at this meeting will focus on crossing over between microbiological sampling and monitoring and marine hydrogeology, with the primary goal of on developing a basic level of understanding among two disparate groups: those involved in development and use of CORK systems for marine hydrogeological studies, and microbiologists working in the deep biosphere or in other settings. It is important to note that this is a technologically challenging area of research and one that is extremely new to science and in particular microbiology. In order to succeed, this workshop will need to move beyond the standard introductory lectures that attempt to survey an entire discipline in 45 minutes. Instead, the workshop will comprise a series of linked discussion and practical calculations, introducing basic concepts in biogeochemistry, fluid flow, and solute fate and transport. It is not possible to provide a comprehensive curriculum in any of these topics given the short time available. Instead, workshop leaders will develop a series of presentations and exercises that provide a mechanism for non-specialists to gain a basic grasp of one or more key concepts (e.g., carbon fixation and accumulation of biomass, driving forces for fluid flow in the crust and associated budgets for nutrients, exchange between more and less biologically-important microenvironments during fluid transport).

Hawai‘i Island Chamber of Commerce, with support from Hawaii County Office of Research and Development, will be releasing the first printing of the “Hazard Preparedness Pocket Card”.   This innovative educational tool will be distributed throughout the community and to visitors on the Big Island in a limited release edition at the end of March.

The first such tool of its kind, the Pocket Card, and the accompanying website http://hazardprep.com/ (under construction), will provide vital information on “HOW TO AVOID BECOMING A VICTIM” during a natural disaster.

Included in the guide is information on disaster preparedness actions in the event of tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes, windstorms, rainfall, flooding, storm surge, high surf and volcanic hazards. Specific, and immediate instructions are recommended and the guide also containes a listing of medical facilities, fire stations, tsunami evacuation zones, radio stations. Information on basic disaster kits supplies is also provided.

With the help of Civil Defense and the USGS, Dr. Walter Dudley and the UHH Conference Center, have undertaken the project to provide as much comprehensive information as possible in this small and convenient Pocket Guide. With the invaluable support from the Big Island Visitor’s Bureau, commending the slogan of “We Prepare Because We Care”, KGMB, Hui Ka Ua and Green Collar Technologies, the informational guide will, hopefully, set a model for innovative delivery methodologies in terms of disaster mitigation.

The HICC Tourism Committee, Chaired by Judith Fox-Goldstein, undertook this project with the full enthusiasm and support of the HICC Board. Committed to sustainability and developing healthy communities, the HICC, once again, has taken a very pro-active lead in contributing to our community.

The State of Hawaii with its diverse grouping of Islands serves as the backdrop this year for a variety of unique technical tours for conference attendees. The tours will explore elements of the planet earth indigenous in the environment of Hawaii, current and extensive scientific research and development, and engineering landmarks displaying the ancient and rich history of this extraordinary State.

TOUR REGISTRATION

Preregistration is required for all tours so that proper arrangements for transportation may be made, and minimum and maximum capacities are maintained. Registration for the post-conference tours on the Big Island and Maui is available by clicking on the appropriate links above.

The post-conference tours on Hawaii’s Big Island and Maui require a list of names and personal information of tour participants 30 days in advance of the tours. Required information, collected as part of the registration process, includes: last name, first name, title, date of birth, driver’s license number or state identification number. Foreign nationals are permitted to attend the tours, but must provide their passport number, expiration date and country of origin when registering for the tour, and have their passport with them for access to all tours.

TRANSPORTATION

REFUNDS AND SUBSTITUTIONS

Due to the tour capacity limits this year, no refunds will be made for cancellations after May 22, 2009, or for no-shows. Tour participant substitutions are not permitted because of the security requirements at each tour location.

In collaboration with the Onizuka Memorial Committee, hundreds of volunteers, exhibitors and presenters, UHH hosted the 8th annual Ellison Onizuka Science Day.

Celebrating the life and achievements of Astronuat Ellison Onizuka, who perished during the Challenger tragedy, this day is inspired by Ellison’s committment to the students of Hawaii and his passion for science and math.

Astronaut Daniel Tani offered a view from above as he shared photos and DVDs from his recent 18 months aboard the ISS (International Space Station).

Exhibits from the CSAV and marine science, together with workshops and displays from ‘Imiloa, IFA, USGS, NOAA, and the telescope community, added to the excitement of the day, but we are hoping for increased participation from the faculty as we make plans for the 10th Annual Ellison Onizuka Science Day. Please do join us!

As Chancellor Tseng watched over 600 students enraptured by science wizard, Dale Olive, she remarked on what an outstanding opportunity this day is for UHH. “It’s a time to capture the interest of these potential students and to let them know about our cutting edge science programs.” So, with that thought in mind, please do let us know if you’re interested in participating as a presenter or if you’d like to offer a hands-on workshop for students. The metaphors of cultural authenticity, economic sustainability, and the preservation of natural resources rang clear and true through the duration of the conference; Live Koa, Kukui and Kalo decorated the conference rooms, and an indigenous plant display provided by the Kaua’i Rare Plant Conservation was a symbolic reminder of the State’s intent and mission to “strategically manage Hawai’i tourism in a sustainable manner…”

HTA directly addressed the dire situation of Hawai’i's economy, offering insightful messages covering topics ranging from the Korean and Chinese markets and visitor statistics to Hawai’i's airlines industry.

Keynote speakers included: Thomas K. Kaulukukui, Jr., Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Queen Lili’uokalani Children’s Centers and Ted Bush, Waikiki Beach Boy, President, Waikiki Beach Services.

This past Tuesday, May 13, 2008, the Team from the UH Hilo Conference Center participated in the HTA Festivals & Events Seminar.

Muriel Anderson flew over from Honolulu to host the event which featured speakers Dan McConnell, Managing Director of DDB Public Relations; Ed Struzik, 2008 President of the Gilroy Garlic Festival; and Joe Vera, President & CEO of the BorderFest.

During the Breakout Sessions, our very own Assistant Director, Mary Ann Tsuchiyama, delivered a presentation entitled: “Operation 101: Mission Impossible…or Mission Possible.” The PowerPoint kicked off with the backing soundtrack of the movie which set the stage for the action-packed theme of putting on a successful event. This year’s Onizuka Science Day kicked off in the UHH Theatre. With the booming soundtrack of Star Trek, Final Frontier, heavy smoke, and a dazzling light effect, the Klingon Kurn, Captain of the Imperial Klingon Vessel HecK Tar, Klingon Defense Force, saluted the participants of the 8th annual event.

Chancellor Rose Tseng managed to attend despite a hectic schedule, and prior engagements at Hogwarts University.

Approximately 570 students in grades 4-12, and their parents registered to participate in the opening ceremonies featuring keynote speaker, Astronaut Barbara Morgan, who spent over 12 days in outer space aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor, and the International Space Station.

Morgan was selected as the backup candidate for the NASA Teacher in Space Program on July 19, 1985. From September 1985 to January 1986, Morgan trained with Christa McAuliffe and the Challenger crew at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas. Barbara’s presentation set the stage for a day of over 21 engaging, interactive workshops with titles from “Wooly Magma Felted Earth” to “Food Safety: Growing your own Non-Circulating Hydroponic Lettuce.”

The mission of PISCES is to develop new technologies that will enable humans to live on the Moon and beyond. It will feature a simulated lunar outpost on the Big Island, where research, technology development, educational programs, testing and astronaut training will be conducted in the lunar-like setting of Hawai`i’s volcanic terrain. PISCES is a partnership between the State of Hawai`i, industry, academia and the governments of Japan and the U.S., and is based at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo.

This conference was an excellent opportunity for researchers and educators from industry, academia and government, along with interested parties from Hilo, the Big Island, the State of Hawaii and the national and international space exploration and space commerce communities to learn what is planned for PISCES, take part in the discussions, and help steer its development for the maximum benefit of all the stakeholders and humankind.

sustainable living through rainwater catchment was celebrated from August 14-17th during the 2007 American Rainwater catchment Systems Association Conference.

Rainwater harvesting enthusiasts, practitioners, and experts discussed a broad range of rainwater catchment topics, including potable and non-potable household supply, storm-water runoff control, groundwater recharge, sustainable development, floods and droughts

This conference presented information valuable to users, public health officials, academics, designers, installers, architects, builders, product vendors, students, planners, and water utility staff.

The conference was held at Kilauea Military Camp located on the Island of Hawai`i.

SCCM – The 15th American Physical Society Conference on Shock Compression of Condensed Matter was held on the Big Island of Hawai`i during the summer of 2007. The conference hotel is situated on the Kohala coast, 30 miles north of Kona. The scientific focus of the Conference was on fundamental and applied research topics related to shock wave compression of condensed matter. SCOPE OF THE MEETING
The motivation for holding PP-V in Hawai`i was based on recent efforts to develop interdisciplinary research in these areas within the University of Hawai`i. The Institute for Astronomy, in close collaboration with the Hawai`i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology, recently started a Center for Star and Planet Formation in order to specifically explore the interfaces between studies of the early solar system through Kuiper belt objects, comets, and meteorites, and studies of the formation of stars and planetary systems.

The goals of the meeting were four-fold: (1) to present an overview of the major areas of progress since PP- IV; (2) to bring researchers together for discussions and exchanges of ideas; (3) to strengthen future interdisciplinary research in these areas; and (4) to encourage the participation of young researchers and advanced students in these fields of research.

The Mycological Society of America (MSA) and Mycological Society of Japan (MSJ) will met in a joint conference on the University of Hawai`i at Hilo campus from July 30, 2005 to August 5, 2005. This was the first time the two societies have met together and celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Mycological Society of Japan. Field trips, symposia, and poster sessions discussed all aspects of the importance of fungal interactions with plants and animals around the world and especially with humans.

Special sessions revealed newly described Hawaiian mushrooms and fungi, as well as the most recent technology on how to grow mushrooms commercially and how to extract unique pharmaceuticals from fungi. The Japanese brought new and exciting information on medical and industrial mycology occurring in Japan. The meetings provided an ideal atmosphere for American and Japanese scientists to exchange ideas and technology and to forge collaborations for the future.

“Our Mushroom (Mycology) Conference just grew and grew until we reached our capacity and more as we prepared for the Mycology Society of American and the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Japan Society of America.

But, by working in conjunction with the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel and the University of Hawaii at Hilo Conference Center, there was nothing they were not able to accomplish! They were a “Miracle Workers” as they assisted in all facets of developing and implementing our conference. Whether it was technology or hospitality….they were on top of every detail.

With delegates from more than 16 countries (all of whom needed special accommodations and assistance), there was always someone willing to help, willing to assist and willing to share Aloha with our delegates.

What an outstanding meeting! It was touted as the BEST MYCOLOGY meeting in the history of the Society…and after 2 years of planning, that made us feel very proud. We are indebted to the University of Hawaii at Hilo Conference Center for sharing their expertise, their mana’o, and their hospitality. The foundation of excellence in service and hospitality would be hard to beat in Hilo. What a magnificent event! Mahalo to all!

EPEC: What It Is
Education in Palliative and End-of-Life Care (EPEC) is a curriculum developed at the American Medical Association to educate physicians and other healthcare professionals on fundamental palliative and end-of-life skills including:

• Managing Pain and Symptoms
• Withholding/Withdrawing Treatment
• Communicating Bad News
• Managing Anxiety, Delirium, Depression
• Negotiating Goals of Care
• Medical Futility
• Ethical Decision Making
• Legal Issues in End-of-Life Care

EPEC: Why It’s Needed
A recent article in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that end-of-life care in the U.S. remains ‘woefully inadequate’. The study found that:

• One in four people who died did not receive enough pain medication and sometimes received none at all.
• One in two patients did not receive sufficient emotional support. This was 1.3 times more likely in the case in an
  institution.
• One in four respondents expressed concern over physician communication and treatment decisions.
• Twenty-one percent complained that the dying person was not always treated with respect. Compared with a home setting, this was three times higher in a hospital.

In a similar vein, the Final Report of the Governor’s Blue Ribbon Panel on Living and Dying with Dignity observed:

• Most die in acute care facilities receiving care that is aggressively administered. Sometimes the result is additional suffering and indignity.
• The evidence of over-treatment is compelling. Often the care the dying receive is, in reality, a heroic attempt to prolong life for relatively short periods.
• Healthcare providers rarely recommend an acceptance of death even when it is clearly the most rational decision.
• Hospice care is not considered often or early enough

Trip Description
Depart Naniloa Hotel at 3:00 p.m. in an air-conditioned 4-wheel drive 15-passenger van. After stops at 6,000 feet and 9,300 feet to acclimate to altitude we proceed to the nearly 14,000 feet summit of Mauna Kea to view a spectacular sunset above the clouds. Here we begin to understand why this is considered the world’s premier site for astronomical observation. A total of 12 international observatories are located here, the highest concentration on a single summit anywhere, proves this to be true. After sunset we return to the visitor center at 9,300 feet for stargazing in a more comfortable atmosphere. Here astronomers are on hand with telescopes to help you comprehend the unrivaled view of the heavens. A small museum and gift shop are located at the Elison Onizuka Visitor Center. After several hours of stargazing we are ready to return to the hotel by 11:00 p.m.

Advisory
Due to extreme altitude this trip is not advised for those in poor health, pregnant or heart and respiratory conditions. Scuba divers should be aware of dangers associated with altitude and children under 16 are not permitted. Weather conditions understandably cannot be guaranteed.

Time
The entire tour is scheduled for 8-hour total, including acclimation and drive time. Departure is at 3:00 p.m. returning around 11:00 p.m.

Trip Description
Discover the awesome power of volcanic eruptions while visiting the most active volcano in the world. Sulfur banks, steam vents, lava flows, craters, lava tubes and expert geologists add to this powerful experience.

The 45-minute journey will depart from the Hawai`i Naniloa Hotel for Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park where you’ll explore the lush, green forestry and volcanic calderas. The volcano, in its extraordinary magnificence, is a force of nature that the Hawaiian people understand as a “way of life”. Early Polynesians understood the nature of the volcanoes, and through their respect, they connected with Madame Pele through chants, hula and stories.

The first stop within the park includes the Kilauea Visitor Center, where a resource geologist will provide historical information on past and present lava flows, ethnobotany and geological events. Your next stop will be Kilauea Iki Crater where you’ll take and extraordinary hike along the trail of the crater.

After a wonderful picnic lunch, your next stop will be an actual nature-made lava tube, called “Nahuku” that formed due to the rushing of red, hot, molten lava. A 20-minute 1/3 mile walk through a tree fern forest takes you into a cave like lava tube with man-made lighting, bringing you out at the other end of the lush, green, fern forest.

Please bring a light sweater or jacket and light rain gear.

E Komo Mai – Welcome

Extreme isolation and spectacular environmental heterogeneity have combined to provide the Hawaiian Islands with one of the most fascinating biota in the world. The volcanic island chain is continuously forming in the center of the North Pacific Ocean as the Pacific tectonic plate slowly moves northwest over a stationary hot spot in the earth’s mantle. As a result, the current high islands in the archipelago range in age from fresh lava surfaces being produced daily by Kilauea volcano on the Island of Hawai’i, to sites more than 5 million years old on Kaua’i.

Hawai‘i’s volcanic mountains, which reach up to 4205 m above sea level, interact with the tradewinds to produce such a wide range of climates that most of the world’s terrestrial biomes are represented in the archipelago, including tropical rain forest, savannah, and alpine desert. This environmental diversity has made Hawai’i a model system for studies of vegetation dynamics and ecosystem development.

Because Hawai’i is separated from the nearest continent by 3750 km of ocean, few organisms have been able to colonize the islands naturally. However, many species that did establish underwent extensive evolution, producing some of the world’s best-studied examples of adaptive radiation, including honeycreepers, land snails, drosophilid flies, lobelioids, and silverswords.

Recently, the arrival of humans and alien species in the islands has transformed many Hawaiian ecosystems and caused hundreds of species of plants and animals to become extinct or endangered. Sadly, this now makes the Hawaiian islands a model system for studies of invasive alien species and conservation of rare species.
Organization

Five conference days will feature plenary sessions, contributed papers, posters and special sessions on topics around the conference theme. A mid-conference field trip for all participants is planned to explore leeward and windward altitudinal gradients on young and old lava flows, impacts of invasive species on native ecosystems, and community rehabilitation. Capping the last evening of the conference will be a banquet of tropical delicacies and Hawaiian music and dance. Pre- and post-conference field trips will provide an outstanding opportunity to explore the rich evolutionary landscape across several of the main islands in the Hawaiian chain and to engage researchers and managers attempting to understand and conserve the health of these plant communities. Programs to experience the rich Hawaiian natural and cultural heritage are planned for accompanying family and friends as well as participants.
Meeting Highlights

Explore the plant communities of Hawai’i with the experts. Field trip leaders Dieter Mueller-Dombois, Linda Pratt, Peter Vitousek and others have decades of experience studying the ecosystem and vegetation processes in Hawai’i and the Pacific.

Plenary speakers will include (with tentative topics) Peter Vitousek (formation and development of the Hawaiian island ecosystems), John Ogden (the legacy of Pleistocene events in modern vegetation), Patrick Kirch (the impacts of Polynesians on island ecosystems), Julie Denslow (assessing impacts of invasive species on plant communities), Bastow Wilson (local and regional control of vegetation processes), Boone Kauffman (fire and land use in tropical ecosystems) and Campbell Webb (implications of phylogeny for plant ecological processes).

Special sessions are planned on tropical Pacific landscapes, on patterns of species richness along natural and disturbed elevation gradients, on disturbance-based vegetation management, on the role of urbanization for plant diversity and on ecoinformatics. We look forward to receiving your contributions to the discussions at the symposium.

Financial Support for Students

We will have modest funds available to defray registration fees for university students. A waiver of the registration fee is available in exchange for assistance with program organization, registration, AV monitoring, etc. (ca. 12 -16 hours). We also have limited additional funds to assist students with the costs of registration and travel. If you are interested in attending the conference and helping the organizers in exchange for a waiver of your registration fee, please send the information below by April 1st. If you responded to the earlier call, please respond again if you wish to be considered for the broader range of support currently available.

Field Excursions

Pre- and Post-Symposium field excursions are planned to explore Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park (July 16-18) and the islands of Maui and Kaua’i (July 24-28) with expert field naturalist guides. A mid-symposium excursion is free and open to all registrants (July 21); four alternative trips will provide a variety of experiences and entail hikes of different lengths.

Social Programs and Activities

Kailua-Kona
The IAVS conference is situated in the beautiful, seaport village of north Kona, more affectionately known as Kailua-Kona. This is foothill country leading up to Mount Hualalai and Mauna Loa. With a rolling, and rocky countryside and very dry and sunny climate, Kailua is known as the center of for all West Hawaii.

The climate ranges from arid desert to humid tropical and in July temperatures will run in the low to mid 80′s, but there are comfortable trade winds cooling the island. Outlying villages include Holualoa, Honalo and Kainaliu.

We have planned several opportunities for symposium participants to get together in a relaxed atmosphere and to enjoy the food, music and dance of Hawai’i. An Opening Reception, included in participants’ registration fee, is planned for the evening of Sunday, July 18, to meet old and new friends.

The Symposium Dinner and Closing Party the evening of July 23 will be held on the luau grounds of the King Kamehameha Hotel and will feature delicacies from across the Pacific and Hawaiian music and dance.

A day-long excursion for accompanying family and friends is planned for Tuesday, July 20. The day will begin at the ancient Place of Refuge, Pu’uhonua o Honaunau, where a ranger from the National Park Service will guide us through a faithfully reconstructed Hawaiian village. We will explore other Hawaiian archaeological sites and picnic along the Kona coast. In the early afternoon we will join the crew of the Fairwinds to sail, swim and snorkel in Kealakekua Bay. The day will end with a barbecue aboard and an early evening return to the hotel. Numerous other activities are available in the area; the conference organizers will facilitate tours by small groups.
